Quarantine Reads

I’ve had a love for reading for as long as I can remember. Once I started high school, my love for reading started to slowly decline mainly based on all of the reading assignments for school (I can’t stand forced reading). This, of course, rolled over into college and I saw it slowly creeping into my post-college life. Once I noticed this forming I decided to add it to my goals (check out Killin’ Goals All 2020 post if you haven’t already) and started to find my love for reading again. If I basically just described you check out some of my book suggestions below (all of the links are in partnership with Amazon, so if you are interested in any of the books please feel free to use my links – it would be greatly appreciated!):

My Time With God

I started this devotional this year as a way to create a new start to my morning routine. Joyce Meyer is great in the way she relates real-life situations to building a better relationship with God, and a lot of times she hits the nail right on the head of what I’m going through at that very moment! Highly recommend this one as a great daily devotional and I will start sharing it more on my IG story!

Relationship Goals

Believe all the hype! Pastor Mike Todd did that! Like many, I am a huge fan of the #RelationshipGoals sermon series + Transformation Church and now a HUGE fan of his book as well as the study guide. Both books complimented each other well and were great conversation starters for David and I. The best part for me is that this book isn’t just for people in current relationships. It’s for singles, couples, friendships, and family members that are overall trying to get better at aiming in relationships. Go check it out this New York Times Bestseller!

We’re Going to Need More Wine

First off, who doesn’t love Gabrielle Union! I’ve been a fan of hers since Bring It On, so when I heard so many great things about this book I had to check it out and I have to agree that it is AMAZING! I promise I could not put this book down while I was traveling for work. So many great and relatable stories about her upbringing/life and for sure another HIGHLY recommended!

Becoming

Our Forever First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama, pins a heartwarming memoir of not just her journey to the White House, but her childhood in the South Side of Chicago. She relates to not only Black girls, but young girls of all nationalities. She details relatable struggles and inspires the reader as only Michelle Obama can do so well. Finally, who doesn’t love hearing about her love story with our Forever President Barack Obama?

Richest Man In Babylon

A very quick read which should be no excuse for why people haven’t read this book! I read it the first week of the year and it has completely motivated me and the way I look at my finances. The old principles used to save money and pay off debt are still relevant today. Take the time to read a chapter a day (as suggested by the author) and take control of your finances in 2020. It’s not too late!

The Four Agreements

My mom suggested that I read this book while I was in high school and I later found out that it was passed down from my grandmother. The life lessons that are illustrated within the Four Agreements can be life-altering if you truly take everything to heart. This is a novel for those who want to mature and an overall better outlook on the life we’re living.

The 5 Love Languages

Another book that I feel everyone should read! If you haven’t taken the Love Language Test, use these links to take it (Singles Test and Couples Test). The book allows a breakdown of each love language along with examples of how you could fulfill these love languages for your family members, friends, or partners. David and I talk about our love languages ALL the time! Taking this test/reading the book was not only eye-opening for both of us, but truly governs the way we operate in our relationship today.

Black Privilege / Shook Ones

I’ve been a huge fan of The Breakfast Club since I was a senior in high school and always loved Charlamagne Tha God’s honesty and humor. His first New York Times Bestseller, Black Privilege, was not only a great tale of his life stories but also professed his literary voice loud and clear. To me, this is a #1 quality of any book. If I know anyone from TV or social media and heard them talk I want to hear the same thing when reading their books. The same goes for his 2nd book Shook Ones. If you are working towards becoming more aware of your mental health and anxiety, I feel this is a great book to build up your knowledge.

The Last Black Unicorn

We all know Tiffany Haddish to be hilarious in movies like Girls Trip and this book was no different! Tiffany told great and funny stories of her life coming up in Foster Care and her rise to fame. If you want a book to help you decompress and laugh after a long day this is definitely the book for you. Warning – this book definitely has some explicit content at times lol

Atomic Habits

WARNING – This book is not for the weak at heart! It will read you up and down about your terrible habits, while also picking you up to let you know how to make them better. This is a perfect read to help you build better and stronger habits after months of quarantine!

Make It Work

I watched Tony Gaskins on The Breakfast Club promoting this book and I had to get it the same day! This is another great read for couples, singles, and those who are just currently learning from your past relationships. Chapter after chapter, Gaskins uses real-life examples of what he believes can help all relationships. I highly suggest you and your partner read a chapter a day or week and having a discussion/review over it – makes for a great discussion!

Current Read

Broke Millennials

We’re halfway through the year and I’m still trying to get as much knowledge under my belt as possible especially before the responsibilities of marriage and merging finances start. All I have to say is so far so good with this book! Definitely let you guys know how I like it!
